HOSEA GEAR'S imposing form has cast its shadow over the All Blacks camp ahead of tonight's test against Wales.

A hat-trick, albeit against an understrength England, has the drums beating at a deafening level for the Wellington wing to be included in the Tri-Nations squad.

One of the men under most pressure from Gear's push to add to his two test caps is All Blacks wing Zac Guildford.

While Cory Jane, Joe Rokocoko and Richard Kahui have all had their moments out wide, Guildford's been largely watching from the sidelines.

Now he's keen to take a leaf out of his former Hurricanes team- mate Gear's book and find the tryline in Hamilton.

"Hosea went well, scored three tries, so hopefully I can do that on Saturday," the 20-year-old said after watching the Maori's 35-28 win over England. "I'm itching to get out there and have a crack. The boys have been playing really well, so to get out there on Saturday and have my crack, I'm just excited."

And a tad frustrated. Guildford got 18 minutes at the end of the first test against Ireland, but sat out last week's 42-9 win over Wales.

"It's always frustrating to sit back there and watch the other boys put 60 on the Irish and then another 40 on the Welsh, so I'm looking forward to having my turn," he said ahead of what will be his fourth test cap.

"I haven't really had that many messages, to be fair. It's just to be clear of the game plan and go in with a lot of clarity."

Guildford said the All Blacks coaches encouraged their backs to express themselves.

"There's a lot more running. I don't think any wing in New Zealand likes kicking the ball, so we have a licence to have a crack out there.

"We are spending a lot of time doing one-on-ones, beating a man and spotting a weak link in the defensive line and taking advantage of that."

So does that mean there's no fear of making a mistake as long as you are trying?

"Nah, we could get fried, so you have to think about those 50-50 balls," Guildford said.

"If they come off you don't get in trouble, but if they don't and you do it a few times you probably will. It's just that risk versus reward factor, I guess."
